cosmic devotion

beliefs

i do not belong to any organized religion.

i don't think it's my place to pass judgement on any other religion. i don't care what other people believe. if your beliefs align with mine, or if you find my beliefs interesting, i write about them on this site. if you disagree with me, that's fine. if you think i'm going to hell or something, ok.

i believe that the whole of creation is sacred. from distant galaxies to the dirt under your feet, all that has ever existed in our universe, no matter how briefly, is divine. if i refer to "the universe", i am referring to the physical world that we live in, not any god-like force or consciousness.

if existence is divine, human beings, then, are divine.

i believe that worship of the divine should never be required. i don't know that the cosmic forces around us mind at all how you feel about them. however, it is enriching, and it can bring about a lot of personal fulfillment and a sense of connection to engage with your spirituality. for me, that means appreciating existence- thinking on and living out the parts of my life and creation that i'm grateful for, that fascinate me, or that make me feel unity with the world around me.

i do not believe that morality is divinely mandated. i don't believe in heaven or hell, nor that the universe has any opinions on the changes we make on it. morality is mandated by human beings- it's a uniquely human concept to believe in sin or virtue. morality depends on culture and context. the moral ideal which i strive toward is to live in a way that is compassionate and nurtures the world around me, helping other people to experience and appreciate their favorite parts of existence and to survive and recover from the difficult ones.

i don't have any true religious beliefs about the afterlife or what happens after death. it's impossible to know and not particularly worth dwelling on, in my opinion. what matters is your life- the small window of consciousness where you are able to explore the divinity of the universe around us.

i have no opinion on the worship of God or god/s. i think that this is generally a way to condense an abstract concept into one that is more tangible, for the purposes of making connection to that abstract concept easy for a human being. deities represent things like the destructive and renewing qualities of fire, the power and temperament of the ocean, or the cosmic forces which led to the creation of life in the universe. i personally don't feel a connection to deities the way that i feel a connection to the thing that they represent. for me, it's easier to just worship fire, or the ocean, or the existence of life itself.

people are meant to help each other, and to be helped by others. this is something we evolved to do. our abilities to communicate and to provide for each other is what made us successful as a species. no man is an island, and compassion is a virtue.
